Let us pray, dear Lord in chambers of political power like this we do a lot of talking. So we pray that we might be better listeners. First of all to those who are often left out and left behind like the homeless families I met last night in this city of Sacramento. We listen to you to remind us through your prophets the test of a nation’s righteousness is not its gross national product, its military firepower or its cultural dominance, but how it treats the poor and vulnerable. In the words of Jesus who says to us “as you’ve done the least to these you’ve done to me.” Lord help us listen to each other. In this Chamber and the Chamber, I often see in my hometown of Washington DC we often aren’t listening well to each other and finding solutions to the real problems that our people are having. So we pray that we follow the advice of the prophet Micah, “to do justice and love kindness and walk humbly with our God.” AMEN.

Let us pray, Our Father in Heaven we pray that as Jesus taught us to pray, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven and may each of us be an instrument in the fulfilment of your will here on earth. We’re deeply thankful for the great opportunity that we have to serve as senators of this state and as we move towards the conclusion of this session we would ask as we address the problems of this state that you would grant us wisdom and that in our interactions with one another, may we deal with one another with understanding and kindness. Amen

Come Holy Spirit. Replace the tension within us with a holy relaxation. Replace the turbulence within us with a sacred calm. Replace the anxiety within us with a quiet confidence. Replace the fear within us with a strong faith. Replace the bitterness within us with the sweetness of grace. Replace the coldness within us with a loving warmth. Replace the night within us with your day. Replace the winter within us with your spring. Straighten our crookedness. Fill our emptiness. Dull the edge of our pride. Sharpen the edge of our humility. Light the fires of our love. Quench the flames of our lust. Let us see ourselves as you see us. That we may see you as you have promised. And be fortunate according to your word. Blessed are the pure of heart, for they shall see God. (Prayer of St. Richard to the Holy Spirit)

I am reading from the book of Ecclesiastes and it reminds us of the fact that there is a time for all things and in spite of all our wisdom and knowledge; our lives are in the hand of God. For everything, there is a season and a time for every matter under Heaven, a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to pluck up what is planted. A time to kill and a time to heal, a time to break down and a time to build up, A time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance. A time to throw away stones and a time to gather stones together, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing. A time to seek and a time to lose, a time to keep and a time to throw away. A time to tear and a time to sew, a time to keep silent and a time to speak. A time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace. What gain had the workers from their toil? I have seen the business God has given to everyone to be busy with. He has made everything suitable for its time. Moreover, He has put a sense of past and future into their minds. Yet, they cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end. I know that there is nothing better for them than to be happy and enjoy themselves as long as they live. Moreover, it is God’s gift that all should eat and drink, and take pleasure in all their toil. I know that whatever God does endures forever; nothing can be added to it nor anything taken from it. God has done this so that all should stand in awe of Him. That which has already been; that which is to be, already is, and God seeks out what has gone by.

To You Lord we are grateful for another day to live and to serve, giving honour unto Your name. We are thankful for this day and opportunity to remember the legacy and dream of Your servant Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Grant us today the grace, as You did Dr. King, to “discern righteousness and justice and equity and every good course.” (Prov. 2:9). Align our hearts and actions with that of Your Son, that we have NOT “come to be served, but to serve” (Mt. 20:28). I pray for each and everyone assembled here today that the labour of their hands would in the words of Dr. King produce, “out of the mountain of despair, a stone of hope.” Bless those here today to collaborate, to legislate, to do justice and to serve those who sent them, upon this stone of hope. Give us hope today. Hope for tomorrow. Hope to livethe dream. In Your name, we pray.—AMEN.

O Lord, we thank You for the wisdom that You imbue in each of us. We’ve been entrusted by the folks that we represent to speak our minds here and to represent them well. May You give us the wisdom that Solomon requested, Father, as we make these decisions in these troubled and challenging times. May Your peace which surpasses all understanding guard our hearts and minds through Christ Jesus, Your Son. Bless us this day. We pray in Jesus’ name.—AMEN.
